Part of the 100 Series, the Massey Ferguson 165 (MF165) is a row-crop tractor that was built in Massey Ferguson’s Detroit, Michigan plant in the USA from 1964 and was discontinued in 1975. Just like the MF135, it was the most popular tractor in the market during its time.

The MF165 was offered with one of four engines: the 3.3-litre Perkins diesel engine, the 2.9-litre Continental gasoline engine, the 3.5-litre Perkins diesel engine, or the 3.5-litre Perkins gasoline engine. All four engines have four cylinders each as well as liquid cooling.

The 3.3-litre Perkins’s bore/stroke measures at 91 x 127 mm, while the 2.9-litre Continental is at 91 x 111 mm, and both 3.5-litre Perkins are at 98 x 114 mm. All four engines can give 58.3 hp. It has a 70-litre fuel capacity.

This tractor comes in a 4×2 two-wheel-drive chassis. It has power steering, mechanical dry disc brakes, and an open operator station. As for the transmission, the MF165 was fitted with one of three systems: a 12-speed partial power shift, a 6-speed, or an 8-speed.

The 12-speed partial power shift is actually Massey Ferguson Multi-Power transmission, which has 12 forward and four reverse gears and a dry disc clutch. It has three gears (1-3) in two ranges (Lo/Hi) with two-range Multi-Power shift between low and high.

The MF165’s hydraulics system is an open centre with a capacity of 30.3 litres and 17 litres-per-minute pump flow. With a rear type of I, II, or I/II, its hitch can lift load weighing up to 1,630 kg. This tractor came with a live rear PTO as a standard but an independent type was also available as an option.

As for other features, the MF165 has a front-end loader attachment. It has two variants: a wide front and a tricycle. The wide front has a wheelbase of 208 cm and front tread ranging from 121 to 223 cm. Meanwhile, the tricycle’s wheelbase measures at 220 cm and the front tread is at 20/15 cm.

A popular secondhand buyer’s choice, the Massey Ferguson 165 proves to be a reliable tractor despite its age. Because of its relatively basic design compared to other tractors, it is easy to operate and repair, making it ideal for first-time operators.
